Natural Gas Meter Safety, Access, and Upkeep

Located outside of your home or business, your natural gas meter is how gas safely enters your premises. Additionally, the meter also measures your monthly usage. Needless to say, your gas meter is a key piece of equipment to ensure you’re able to have the things you need like home heating, hot water, fresh-cooked meals and more! To help keep things in tip-top shape, there are a few things you can do to make sure your natural gas meter is protected from potential risks.

  1. Clear, easy access - Make sure the path to your meter is free from debris, large branches, or vines/overgrowth so it can be reached safely at all times.
  2. Avoid mother nature taking over as seasons change - In the fall, ensure your meter is clear of leaves that may pile up. For colder weather months, gently remove any snow or ice buildup. During the spring and summer months, be sure to keep your meter free of landscaping or shrubbery.
  3. Avoid “personal pile up” around your meter - Don’t lean things up against your meter like equipment, garbage bins, or bicycles. This can cause damage to your piping and doesn’t allow an easy path to the meter in the event of an emergency.
  4. Don’t tie things to your meter - Never tie a pet on a leash to your meter or wrap a garden hose or clothing line to your home or business natural gas meter. Not only is this unsafe, it can also cause damage to your meter or the surrounding pipes.
  5. Create a barrier between your meter and vehicles - If your meter is close to an area that vehicles can access, such as a driveway or parking lot, be sure that a barrier or concrete post is in place to prevent a vehicle from hitting your meter.
  6. Don’t enclose your meter - Avoid building structures around your meter such as a deck or shed.
