Fall Safety Checklist

As the air turns cooler and leaves drop from the trees, it's important to keep a few essential fall safety tips in mind. At Summit Utilities, safety is our #1 priority and with proper precautions and safety awareness, your family can enjoy the fall season.

Maintain your heating system. In order to keep your natural gas appliances operating safely and efficiently, it's important to perform regular maintenance and promptly make any repairs. Be sure to get an inspection of your heating systems and anything else that hasn’t been used in a while.
Check your carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms. These devices are essential to warn you of a fire or dangerous condition involving a furnace, water heater, fireplace or stove.
Check your windows and doors for drafts. Check your windows for any leaks that may compromise your heating efficiency. Insulate around windows and doors to prevent air leaks and keep warm air inside.
Change the air filter in your furnace. A clogged air filter can cause your furnace to work harder than it needs to and may even lead to the furnace not functioning.
Watch out for fall leaves! Remove leaves from around natural gas exhaust and air intakes. Do not pile leaves in a way that limits access to your meter for service visits or emergency situations.
Wash Your Hands! While the fall brings back some of our favorite things, it also brings cold and flu season. With your natural gas water heater, you’re getting twice the hot water but at half the cost.
Call 811 before you dig. Before starting any outdoor digging project, please contact 811 at least three days in advance to request to have underground utility lines marked.
