Little Rock, Arkansas (October 1, 2025) – Summit Utilities (Summit) team members rolled up their sleeves on Wednesday to help Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas renovate for a local family. The volunteer event was held in recognition of Energy Efficiency Day and National Energy Awareness Month, highlighting Summit’s commitment to helping families save energy and money while supporting their communities.

Summit volunteers worked on both interior and exterior construction projects, while also presenting a donation to support Habitat’s mission. The home will energy-efficient appliances, insulation, and other upgrades designed to lower monthly utility bills and keep the family comfortable throughout the year.

“Safe, affordable, and energy-efficient housing is life-changing for families,” said Fred Kirkwood, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Summit. “Our goal at Summit is to help our customers stay comfortable while saving energy and money. By supporting Habitat for Humanity, we’re able to live out that mission in a meaningful way.”

“Partnerships like this help us build more than just homes, they build stronger communities,” said Andrea Newton, Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas Director of Construction. “Thanks to Summit’s donation and volunteer support, a family in Central Arkansas will have access to safe and efficient homes for years to come.”

This project was supported through Summit’s Volunteer Time Off (VTO) program, which provides employees with paid time to volunteer in their communities.

As part of National Energy Awareness Month, Summit reminds customers that anyone can lower their monthly bills by making small energy-efficient changes at home. These simple steps can help conserve energy and keep your home comfortable during the cooler months:

  • Ensure proper airflow: Keep furniture and objects away from your registers so warm air can circulate freely.
  • Prevent heat loss: Close dampers on unused fireplaces, keep garage doors closed, and seal windows and doors to prevent drafts and keep warm air inside.
  • Use natural heat: Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to let sunlight naturally heat your home and close them at night to prevent cold drafts.
  • Adjust your water heater: Lower the temperature to 120°F to save energy while still having plenty of hot water.
  • Maintain your heating system: Schedule an annual inspection with a professional to ensure your furnace is running efficiently and ready for the season.
