FORT SMITH, Ark. (Jan. 8, 2026) - Arkansas Oklahoma Gas (AOG), a subsidiary of Summit Utilities, announced today that Fred Kirkwood, chief customer experience officer, will retire on Jan. 13, 2026, marking exactly 40 years in the natural gas industry.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside people who care deeply about one another, our customers, and the communities we serve,” said Kirkwood. “Everything we’ve accomplished over the years has been the result of strong teams, shared values, and a genuine commitment to doing what’s right. I’m proud of what we’ve built together and grateful for the relationships that will last far beyond my time at AOG and Summit.”

Throughout his career, Kirkwood supported customer-focused initiatives, including energy-efficiency and assistance programs designed to help income-qualified customers improve and manage heating costs. He has also remained deeply engaged in local civic and industry organizations, including Greater Fort Smith Association of Homebuilders, Leadership Fort Smith, the Arkansas Gas Association, United Way, the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce, and the Fort Smith Boys and Girls Club, among others.

In recognition of his service and community leadership throughout his career, Fort Smith Mayor George McGill proclaimed Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, as “Fred Kirkwood Day” in the City of Fort Smith, ahead of Kirkwood’s official retirement. The proclamation honors Kirkwood’s long‑standing commitment to servant leadership, deep investment in the Fort Smith community, and values‑driven career.

Widely regarded as a leader with an infinite capacity for people, Kirkwood is known for pairing deep professional knowledge with humility, integrity, and an unwavering belief that true leadership begins with service to others.

“Fred has led customer-focused operations across six states, supporting more than 625,000 customers. He has played a key role in modernizing customer service, strengthening community relationships, and advancing operational excellence. Fred also embodies our commitment to leadership development and a supportive, growth-oriented culture,” said Kurt Adams, president and chief executive officer of Summit Utilities.

“On behalf of our Board of Directors, we are proud to recognize his contributions with the Bob Carroll Mentorship Award, which honors individuals who exemplify these values and includes a donation to a charitable organization of their choice. We thank Fred for his four decades of service and the lasting impact he has made on our organization and the communities we serve.”
