Digging-related damage is the leading cause of pipeline incidents. Even a slight nick can cause steel lines to corrode or plastic lines to weaken, causing a pipeline emergency days, weeks, or even years after what seems to be the slightest of damage. If you disturb, nick, chip, scratch, or dent a pipeline or coating, you should report it immediately to Summit Utilities.

On a regular basis, we educate emergency officials, public officials, excavators, contractors, and team members so they are prepared to respond in the unlikely event of a natural gas emergency. A pipeline right-of-way must be kept free from structures and other obstructions to provide access to the pipeline for maintenance and in the event of an emergency. If a pipeline crosses a property, trees or high shrubs should not be planted on the right-of-way. Pipelines are often patrolled from the air and obstructions prevent inspection. To ensure this space is readily accessible for maintenance or in case of emergency, please do not dig, build, store, or place items on or near the right-of-way area without first having the pipeline marked and the right-of-way staked.
